Athletes Foot (Tinea Pedis)

Athletes foot is a common, persistent infection of the foot caused by a microscopic fungus that lives on dead tissue. This fungus thrives on a warm, moist environment, making the foot a likely place of inhabitance.

The infection displays itself either between the toes as a white soggy itchy mass of tissue, on the soles of the feet as patchy areas of red blistered lesions, or a dry scaling with associated redness.

The incidence of the condition is more prevalent in teenagers and athletes but can occur in any one.

Self Help

  • Change foot wear on a regular basis and allow them to air out between usage.
  • Use cotton socks, these will allow the feet to breath easier.
  • Dry thoroughly between the toes after showering.
  • Use an over the counter broad spectrum anti fungal spray or cream such as Daktarin.
  • Once the infection is cleared, usually 1-2 weeks, use purified talc on your feet after showering to absorb any excessive perspiration.

But Remember!

If you have athletes' foot it is possible that you may spread it to others! To help prevent this:

  • Use your own towel to dry yourself after showering.
  • Wear swimming socks in the shower and at the swimming pool to prevent cross contamination of the floor.
  • Don't share socks or shoes with anyone else!
